It does not look as though Pain will affect a creature as the target
specifies a character which I will take to mean another Name Giver. I have
looked across several spells and it seems that this is the standard that
applies. In spells that can affect creatures as well, they generally use
the terminology of just target or victim. In spells that seem to affect
name-givers it talks of characters.
So, in other words, I will put spirit double in for you.
Cheers
Mark

Pean stands, rests his staff against the crook of his elbow, and takes
out his sling.
"Farli, Elklisee - should we fight - or run? Any weak spots we should
aim for? They will have to get closer before any of my spells can
affect them - about 30 yards. I am ill-prepared for combat with
animals, but let me see what I can come up with.."
OOC: if he thinks the spell "Pain" will affect these creatures, he will
try and re-attune the matrix containing "Life Circle of One" on the
fly, using a point of karma. If he doesn't think it will, he will do
the same thing, but choose "Spirit Double". If he goes for Pain, after
bringing it to the matrix, he will take pot shots with his sling (using
jagged stones as ammunition), until they are in range, targeting a
different lizard each round (or the same one until the spell moves on).
If he decides on Spirit Double, he will summon it immediately, give it
his staff, and tell it to attack the creatures. He will then continue
summoning them (I assume you can have more than one?), or casting
Astral Spear as appropriate..
