Dear all,
Most of you with a first ed book or who have played before will know this but for the benefit of those that don't....
Advancement through "circles" in ED is via your character experience of the skills involved. That is, how good you are at your talents. Also in ED you cannot simply advance to the next circle, you actually nee to find a master to train you in the talents of the next circle. This can be done the normal pay a fee way or via a ghostmaster (which is a little too complicated to go into yet and besides you need an Orichalum coin which none of you can afford yet)
You can also improve your attributes, once per circle except for first circle of your discipline. You can only ever improve one attribute by one point per circle and these improves cannot be saved up (i.e. if you go to Circle 3 before using your circle 2 attribute advance you lose it and can only advance one whilst circle 3). The cost for the attribute increase depends on how many times the attribute has been increased before (and this will be noted on your sheets). The first increase to an attribute costs 800 LP, the second 1,300, the third 2,100, the fourth 3,400 and the maximum you can improve an attribute, the fifth is 5,500 LP. So if in Circle 2 I improved my Strength one point it would cost me 800 LP and if I improved it again at Circle 3 it would cost 1,300 LP. However if I chose to improve my Dex at Circle 3 rather than Strength it would only cost 800 LP.
Now, to view this table (and for that matter all the tables in this message) correctly, you are going to need to expand this message to fill up the whole screen and also put your computer into 1024x768 screen resolution. If you can't do this I will put it on the site next week in word format.
New Circle Min # Talents Min Rank Single Talent from Circle#
2 5 2 1
3 6 3 2
4 7 4 3
5 8 5 4
6 9 6 5
7 10 7 6
8 11 8 7
9 12 9 8
10 13 10 9
11 14 11 10
12 15 12 11
13 16 13 12
14 17 14 13
15 18 15 14
OK. Now to read this it is best to say "I want to go to Circle 2 so I need at least 5 talents (Min # of Talents) at rank 2 (Min Rank) and at least one of those rank 2 talents needs to be from circle 1. so if I was going to Circle 8 from circle 7 I would need at least 11 talents at rank 8 with at least one of those talents being a Circle 7 talent. once you have acheived that then you can find a master (or use a ghostmaster) to train for next circle which will generally take time and coinage. this will generally meant that you will not be going to next Circle in a short period of time and may also need to take time out as a group to allow this to happen.
Righto, now how do you increase the ranks in your talents. This is where you start to use your legend points that are fresh on your character sheets and involves another table I am sorry to say.
Talent Rank Circle 1-4 Circle 5-8 Circle 9-12 Circle 13-15
1 100 200 300 500
2 200 300 500 800
3 300 500 800 1,300
4 500 800 1,300 2,100
5 800 1,300 2,100 3,400
6 1,300 2,100 3,400 5,500
7 2,100 3,400 5,500 8,900
8 3,400 5,500 8,900 14,400
9 5,500 8,900 14,400 23,300
10 8,900 14,400 23,300 37,700
11 14,400 23,300 37,700 61,000
12 23,300 37,700 61,000 98,700
13 37,700 61,100 98,700 159,700
14 61,000 98,700 159,700 258,400
15 98,700 159,700 258,400 418,100
So, to increase a talent you must first know what circle you got it from. Unarmed Combat for a Warrior is in Circle 1 for example and to improve it from 9 - 10 is going to cost a character 8900 points. This kind of development (that is if you have the talent currently) can be done without a trainer, and if you have any talents from the circle you are on or the circles previous that you have not taken it is assumed that your master has taught you enough to be able to raise it to Rank 1 without further need for training. Also, if you want to improve a talent (say a 5th circle one) from rank 2 to rank 4, you actually have to pay all the legend point costs listed on the chart on the way (so this would cost 1300 LP not just 800 listed next to rank 4)
Skills do not count toward advancement in any way shape or form, however they are handy things and you may also want to advance them then they cost the following in LP. This is the last table, I promise. Due to the fact that you can get skills at any time the cost simply depends on the rank that you want it to go to.
Skill Rank Legend Point Cost
1 200
2 300
3 500
4 800
5 1,300
6 2,100
7 3,400
8 8,900
9 14,400
10 23,300
To upgrade skills at any rank you do need to conduct some training and pay a trainer. There is no Ghost Master option and you need to practice the skill after the training before the skill rank increases.
So, there you have it. There is more to it as well with legendary statuses and ghost masters etc. However, if you want to go up a circle, let me know and I will advise what the talents are for your next circle and also if you pick up any powers at that time. If you just want to upgrade a talent or an attribute at any time let me know also and I will update the sheet. Just do not forget that you can also buy Karma Points with Legend Points and the Karma Ritual talent (up to an amount of points equal to your karma ritual per nights rest). Karma points are required for the use of some talents and may be added to any discipline talents you may have to increase the chances of success! Just let me know if you want to use them!!!!!
So, that was a bloody mammoth task. If there is anything there you don't understand let me know and I will try and help as best I can.
Cheers
Mark
