Garrott listens to Pean and although he had to agree with him that the
danger that they faced could not be allowed to walk about Barsaive, he
wondered if he could stomach killing the being in cold blood. Waiting for
Pean to finish speaking, he slowly eases himself down against the wall.
"Although I agree with you Pean that he is a danger, I do not think that I
would be able to kill Todiel...or the being inhabiting him in cold blood.
Not only does it go against my code, I do not think my discipline would
allow me to do so...at least not with my world view." Garrott could feel
his mind drifting like a leaf on a still pond, about to plumb the depths and
sink into a deep introspection, which Obsidimen were prone to do, pondering
the rights of the being, who did not strike him as being a horror. Pean
himself admitted that the wards against horrors did not work on him and he
had faith in Peans abilites. As to his desire to live, did not Namgivers
wander about Barsaive, many attempting to extend their lives through all
manner of means. If this was the nature of the creature, who could blame
him for how the thread of his life had been woven into the tapestry that
made up the bigger picture. Indeed how could one blame him for the desire
to live at all, perhaps he was required to do this to live, skipping from
body to body like a blood born parasite. Taking Temorya's body therefore
would not be something that he did maliciously, nor were his actions
subsequent to Temorya being returned to his body. Garrott could well
understand the need to do something, as a being that's life was ordained to
be a certain way from his creation, he could well understand why the being
that was Todeil would not feel remorse. After all as a warrior, having been
made to the mould of a warrior, he did not feel guilt when his hammer struck
home or if he consumed the flesh of a creature felled for food. He was sure
that given the opportunity, the hare felled tommorrow would also see
Namegivers as worthy of death for something they saw as a right they had to
eat the hare. Yet what of the right of the Namegiver Todiel took to live a
full life, what of the right of the Namegiver who he had wounded to seek
justice. Also, as adepts were they not duty bound to protect those other
Namegivers who could fall into Todiels trap? It was a deeper thing that he
could well have pondered for long hours and still not come to a completely
happy resolution to. Coming out of the haze of reasoning the Obsidiman took
a long breath, expelling it slowly.
"I believe that Todiel does not do what he does maliciously, the same
way that I do not believe that he could stop what he does by choice, for
were he to he would face death, which he resists in the same way we
do...after all do we as warriors not don armour to protect against it?
Further I do not believe that he is a Horror, but something else. I as a
compassionate Namegiver find it hard to reconcile myself to believing that
he should be killed for trying to live and yet, I honestly believe as a
logical warrior, that as a threat to our safety he should be removed." The
big warrior wrestled with his indecision, his mind split on the matter.
"Yet I believe that we should allow the being that is Todiel to speak, to
tell us his story and to explain why he does what it is he does. He should
have the right to defend himself, whether it be with weapon or voice and I
also believe that only Mynbruje, the scales of justice and arbiter of truth
could pass judgement on this." At this he casts a look at Kerrick. "It is
a shame that we have none present that walk his path and could cast light
upon this quandry and guide our steps."
